  • Emile the Illustrator - Library

Every Brian created was added to a library in case I needed to re-use. These are but a few. I wanted to avoid any repetitive patterns, so generally tweaked them individually.

  • To save time in the long run, our Brian is completely modular, and I used illustrators symbols tab to swap out parts

  • Emile the Illustrator - Airport scene

As it's an airport, the Brians had to act and move differently to the Office scene. I focussed on queues and some off the tropes and details seen at a typical airport.

  • Emile the Illustrator - Stadium Scene

Given the need for crowds, I wasn't sure how I was going to tackle this one. It turned out that the clones would rush the halftime show. Sponsor logos are some of Ramps key clients, and I Broke up the scene by adding a central jumbotron and Blimp

The Project

I was asked by Ramp's creative department to create three Wimmelbilder illustrations in support of their 'Brian Multiplied' TV/Social superbowl campaign. The challenge was that they needed them in roughly three weeks - an incredibly tight timeline for one, let alone three!

There were a few things that gave me some optimism though; The character was a clone of an existing person, Brian Baumgartner who played Kevin Malone in 'The Office' [US]. He'd also be wearing the same suit throughout (except for the 'Real Brian') So, provided I could design a convincing look-alike, I wouldn't have to sweat too much on character design, instead focusing on poses.

Despite the tight timeline, I spent a little upfront on creating a very modular system to help me create variations. I broke up the characters body into sections which I could easily swap out (eg, an arm/hand holding a stack of paperwork to an arm/hand holding a coffee cup). Even things like walls were modular, so I could swap quickly out sections if I wanted to add in a window or door.

Scenes

The scenes relate to the TV spots - the Brian's are making their way to the Superbowl. We start in an office then head to the airport, before arriving at the big game. I took liberties having fun with little interactions, props and nods to The Office as well as corporate life and scene specific tropes.
